Our Story
We've called our home The Thomstead (it rhymes with homestead) for years. It started as a nickname built from our family name, and when we bought a little pop-up camper a few years ago, of course it became Thomstead II. So when it came time to name our business, there really wasn't much debate.
Home has always been at the center of our lives. And, in a lot of ways, it has always been at the center of our work too.
Thomstead Studio may be new, but the two of us have been doing this work for a long time. Frank has spent his career behind the camera. Katie comes from styling, art direction and creative production, which means she is usually thinking about the photograph and the hundred things that need to happen before Frank can take it.
Between us, we have more than forty years of experience creating imagery for national brands, catalogs, editorial and advertising. We’ve worked in studios, historic homes, restaurants and plenty of locations that looked much easier on paper. We’ve photographed interiors, food, products and people, and we’ve learned how to stay flexible when the weather changes, the space fights back or the plan simply isn’t working.
Making a beautiful photograph is part of the job. The rest is listening closely, noticing what matters and figuring out how to bring someone else’s idea to life. We like the collaboration, the problem solving and the small decisions that can take an image from technically right to genuinely good.
Thomstead gives us the chance to focus on the work we’re most drawn to now: homes with character, thoughtful architecture, memorable food and hospitality, well-made products and the people behind all of it.
We care about making images that feel natural, lived in and true to the subject. Nothing overly staged. Nothing stripped of its personality. Just really good work made with people we enjoy working with.
Welcome to The Thomstead.
